A Technical Workshop on Designing for Resilience, Energy Efficiency, and Thermal Comfort

Introduction to the Course

The Climate-Adaptive Architecture and Passive Design Strategies course is a very practical and design-oriented program that will teach you how to design buildings that remain comfortable with less energy consumption, not by opposing the climate, sun, wind, and materials, but by working with them. You will learn how climate-adaptive architecture and passive design strategies are used to minimize cooling demands, enhance indoor comfort, and provide buildings with resilience to heatwaves, humidity, heavy rainfall, and weather changes.

Course Objectives

  • Acquire skills to analyze and optimize building orientation, massing, envelope, and openings for comfort and efficiency.
  • Acquire skills to analyze and master passive cooling techniques such as shading, thermal mass, cross ventilation, stack effect, and night flushing.
  • Acquire skills to analyze and master daylighting, glare control, and façade strategies to reduce lighting and cooling loads.
  • Acquire skills to analyze and evaluate performance outcomes for actual design problems.

What Will You Learn (Modules)

Module 1 — Foundations of Climate-Adaptive Design

  • Bioclimatic Architecture: Understanding the relationship between architecture and climate
  • Ecological Urbanism: Integrating environmental context into urban design
  • Climate Zones and Regional Response Mapping: How different climates require unique architectural responses
  • Building Orientation, Massing, and Site Context: How to adapt designs to local climates and environmental conditions
  • Vernacular Architecture: Learning from historical climate-responsive designs that have stood the test of time

Module 2 — Passive Design Strategies in Practice

  • Passive Cooling: Techniques like ventilation, shading, courtyards, and earth tubes for natural cooling
  • Passive Heating: Utilizing thermal mass, Trombe walls, and sunspaces to capture and retain heat naturally
  • Daylighting and Glare Control: Designing for optimal natural light while minimizing heat and glare
  • Simulation Tools: Hands-on with Climate Consultant, Ladybug Tools, and Rhino/Grasshopper for design optimization and analysis
  • Activity: Apply passive design strategies to create a climate-responsive building plan

Module 3 — Design Studio & Performance Optimization

  • Thermal Comfort Modeling: Understanding PMV, UTCI, and operative temperature for designing comfortable environments
  • Integrated Building Envelope Design: Creating energy-efficient building envelopes that adapt to climate conditions
  • Climate-Responsive Facades and Adaptive Skins: How facades and skins respond to changing environmental factors
  • Final Exercise: Participants will develop a climate-adaptive concept plan for a building that includes passive design strategies for both cooling and heating, integrating energy-efficient solutions
  • Feedback and Q&A: Discussing solutions with experts and peers to refine design concepts
