Designing Climate-Resilient Urban Systems
International Workshop on Sustainable Urban Planning and Climate Adaptation Strategies
About This Course
Designing Climate-Resilient Urban Systems is a specialized, hands-on workshop that addresses the intersection of urban design, infrastructure planning, and climate science. Participants will learn to assess climate vulnerabilities, integrate green and blue infrastructure, and implement nature-based solutions to enhance the adaptability and resilience of cities.
Aim
To empower professionals, researchers, and policymakers with the tools and frameworks needed to design, implement, and manage urban systems that are resilient to climate change, extreme weather events, and environmental disruptions.
Workshop Objectives
- Equip professionals with actionable strategies for urban climate resilience
- Promote multidisciplinary approaches to sustainable urban systems
- Foster data-driven and equity-based urban planning decisions
- Support the integration of nature, infrastructure, and community well-being
- Encourage innovation aligned with SDGs, NDCs, and national urban missions
Workshop Structure
Day 1: Climate Resilience in Urban Systems
- Climate Resilience Frameworks: Analyzing vulnerability, risk assessment, and adaptive capacity in urban settings.
- Resilience Strategies: Implementing nature-based solutions, green infrastructure, and smart city technologies, using tools like Google Earth Engine and QGIS.
- Hands-On: Use Google Earth Engine and QGIS to assess environmental risks and generate vulnerability maps for urban areas.
Day 2: Designing Climate-Resilient Infrastructure
- Resilient Infrastructure Design: Advanced design principles for flood control, urban heat mitigation, and sustainable mobility.
- Adaptive Urban Systems: Leveraging green roofs, permeable surfaces, and water retention strategies to mitigate climate impacts.
- Hands-On: Use QGIS for spatial analysis to develop climate-resilient infrastructure solutions tailored to specific urban risks (e.g., heatwaves, flooding).
Day 3: Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation
- Actionable Resilience Plans: Translating resilience strategies into implementable urban projects, considering policy frameworks and funding.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Defining KPIs for resilience success and using tools like Google Data Studio for progress tracking.
- Hands-On: Develop an actionable climate resilience plan using Google Sheets and Google Docs, including project milestones and performance indicators.
