Biosecurity and Responsible AI in Biological Design: Dual-Use Risk, Sequence Screening and Governance

From Biological AI Risk Assessment to Computational Sequence Screening, Research Safety and Responsible Innovation

30 Nov – 2 Dec 20265:30 PM IST3 DAYSCertificate

Aim

To equip students, researchers, faculty members and industry professionals with practical knowledge and computational skills in biological AI safety, dual-use risk assessment, sequence screening and responsible governance, enabling them to evaluate biological research risks, implement basic computational safeguards and promote secure, ethical and responsible innovation in biotechnology.

Artificial Intelligence is transforming modern biotechnology, genomics and biological design, creating new opportunities for scientific discovery while introducing important biosafety, biosecurity and ethical challenges. This three-day hands-on workshop explores how AI-driven biological research can be evaluated, monitored and governed responsibly. Participants will gain practical experience in dual-use risk assessment, computational DNA sequence screening using Python and Biopython, screening performance evaluation and responsible AI governance. Through guided case studies, public resources and safe synthetic datasets, participants will develop practical skills applicable to academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development and institutional biosafety management.

Workshop Objectives

  • Understand the applications of Artificial Intelligence in genomics, synthetic biology and biotechnology, including associated biosecurity concerns.
  • Identify and assess dual-use risks in AI-enabled biological research using structured risk-assessment frameworks.
  • Learn the fundamentals of DNA and protein sequence screening, sequence similarity analysis and computational safeguards.
  • Perform hands-on sequence screening demonstrations using Python, Biopython and benign synthetic datasets.
  • Evaluate screening performance through sensitivity, precision, recall and false-positive analysis.
  • Explore responsible AI practices, institutional biosafety requirements and international biological research governance frameworks.
  • Develop a practical biosecurity risk-mitigation and responsible AI governance plan for academic or industrial research applications.
