Stem Cell Therapy and Pancreatic Islet Regeneration for Diabetes

Advancing Diabetes Cure through Stem Cell Innovation

Skills you will gain:

About Workshop:

This 3-day online workshop explores regenerative biotechnology for diabetes, focusing on stem cell therapy and pancreatic islet regeneration to restore insulin-producing beta cells. Tailored for faculty, researchers, healthcare professionals, industry experts, and undergraduate/postgraduate students, the program utilizes web-based demonstrations, virtual laboratory resources, stem cell databases, and scientific visualization tools. No programming or laboratory experience is required.

Aim: This workshop aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of stem cell-based therapies, pancreatic islet regeneration, and regenerative biotechnology for diabetes treatment. Through expert-led sessions and browser-based hands-on activities, participants will explore the latest breakthroughs in stem cell biology, pancreatic tissue engineering, and clinical translation without requiring laboratory access or programming skills.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Introduce stem cell technologies for diabetes therapy.
  • Explain pancreatic islet biology and regeneration.
  • Demonstrate tissue engineering approaches for diabetes.
  • Explore clinical translation of stem cell therapies.
  • Introduce gene editing and organoid technologies.
  • Provide practical exposure through online demonstrations and scientific resources.

What you will learn?

🧬 Workshop Structure: Stem Cell Therapy & Pancreatic Islet Regeneration in Diabetes

📅 Day 1: Stem Cells and the Future of Diabetes Therapy

  • Core Topics: Diabetes treatment limitations, stem cell biology (ESCs/iPSCs/adult), $beta$-cell biology, differentiation pathways, islet architecture, and clinical trials (e.g., VX-880).

  • Hands-on Session 1: Explore pancreatic anatomy, cellular islet architecture, and cell lineage tracking using the Human Cell Atlas and CellxGene Explorer.

  • Hands-on Session 2: Map stem cell differentiation pathways to insulin-producing cells using the EMBL-EBI Cell Type Ontology Browser and BioRender.

📅 Day 2: Islet Bioengineering & Regenerative Medicine

  • Core Topics: Islet isolation/transplantation, biomaterials for encapsulation, overcoming immune rejection with hypoimmune stem cells, hydrogel delivery, and artificial pancreas systems.

  • Hands-on Session 1: Investigate global stem cell clinical trials, matching patient enrollment eligibility and cell therapy approaches using ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed.

  • Hands-on Session 2: Model therapeutic translation workflows from bench to bedside using ISSCR guidelines and digital blueprinting via BioRender.

📅 Day 3: Future Technologies in Diabetes Regeneration

  • Core Topics: CRISPR-based $beta$-cell engineering, pancreatic organoids, 3D tissue bioprinting, precision regenerative medicine, and regulatory translational frameworks.

  • Hands-on Session 1: Design a complete regenerative medicine strategy, evaluating optimal stem cell sources and transplantation protocols.

  • Hands-on Session 2: Generate publication-quality scientific figures and translational roadmaps using BioRender, Canva, and Cell Press resources.
