Undoubtedly, the professor’s expertise was evident, and their ability to cover a vast amount of material within the given timeframe was impressive. However, the pace at which the content was presented made it challenging for some attendees, including myself, to fully grasp and absorb the information.

Michaela Jungová michaela.jungova@vurv.cz 155 R Programming for Biologists: Beginners Level

I made a mistake on the very first day, but I did not decipher the originally written IST 3PM correctly. The abbreviation was not explained anywhere and hence I ignored it and waited at 15h European time to connect, while I was in the lab in the morning and did not see the email. Anyway, I take this as my mistake and just point out to you that ist can also be interpreted as international standard time and a European would not think of India until it was mentioned in the email on the day of the workshop, we figured it out! So I missed day 1 of the course, can you send me the materials to finish? Thank you and best regards Michaela Jungová

The first day of the workshop was unacceptable. The posturing done by the presenter was incredibly unprofessional, and due to stubbornness of how “we should already know how to do this” we wasted a third of the day arguing. This all could have been avoided by spending two minutes showing where to find an example fasta file to use in the workshop.

The mentor sometimes did not hear himself properly, which made it difficult to understand some parts of the presentation. Furthermore, the mentor had some difficulties with the presentation display, and sometimes continued the presentation, without advancing the presentation through the slides. Apart from that, I would say that the mentor was up to the workshop. If I had to rate it, I would give it 3 out of 5.

Despite the valuable content, echoing audio, the thick accent of the professor, and various technical issues made it challenging to fully engage. Participants, including myself, provided feedback during the session, but there was no visible effort to address concerns or improve the situation in real-time. It is crucial for future workshops to actively respond to participant feedback for a more effective and inclusive learning experience.

He could have delivered the topics more effectively. The slides were very detailed, but the font was too small, and there was a lot of unnecessary information and images that added no value. The slides were not even in full-screen mode throughout the workshop. The delivery of the speech was slow, and although the workshop was supposed to last for 1.5 hours, he only conducted it for 1 hour each of the three days.

I felt
1)He should know how to operate basic teams operation because it is where he is teaching. On Day1 he wasted 10 mins to open slide show. On Day2 he didn’t switch on the slide show though he learned it on day1 and also the slides got struck at slide 2 and he explained till slide 32(for about 30 minutes)while displaying only slide2! how can someone understand what he taught if he displays something else.
2)He is repeating the same every time. Since you are charging for what you teach! I expected I would learn something from it not just the very basics!
3)On Day1 while explaining the math he can clearly show how math calculations done rather than just showing the slides! because the RF based on calculations, he can explain it clearly.
3)I have expected he will teach what he did in the coding. But he didn’t explain the code clearly and just showed the output.
4) While giving examples in the day3, rather than just teaching the examples, he can teach how to implement because real world implementation is important.

The mentor speaks English that is easy to understand. She always responds to questions.

It might be useful to restructure the presentation. Perhaps it could be divided up according to the days, or into smaller subtopics. This would make it easier to find certain slides when questions arise, or to refer back to previous content.

The postponement of dates is a problem. The second time (within 5 days) I only realized a few minutes before the new appointment that I had to be there at a different time.
The participants also have other appointments and have to plan ahead.

Last but not least, I would like to have as much material as possible at the beginning of the workshop. This allows me to read through the material and ask more specific questions in the sessions.

The mentor is good at Modeling and in silicon studies. But I waited for sharing the some document type or files to input the other tolls. I think the approach would be helpful. Because there are differences of computational. We could not download and set up immediately some programs. therefore this file were helpful to understand her tools.

Overall, the workshop was conducted with professionalism and easy-to-follow teaching methods, allowing us to better understand and grasp the concepts of mathematical models and infectious disease analysis, without overly intimidating the complexity of the mathematics involved.
If we could have files with more exercises, that would be great, and we could be added to a WhatsApp group where we can see what other colleagues around the world are doing and ask questions if necessary.

As I mentioned earlier, the mentor’s English was difficult to understand, which made it challenging to follow the training. A possible solution would be to provide participants with a PDF version of the presentation so we could refer to it after the session. Additionally, the mentor never turned on her camera, did not respond to questions, and there was no Q&A session. These factors significantly reduced the quality and effectiveness of the training.
