About This Course
Participants will explore how microscale channels and integrated components can be used to control, manipulate, mix, separate, and analyze small volumes of fluids for applications in biomedical diagnostics, biosensing, drug screening, point-of-care testing, cell analysis, and environmental monitoring.
Aim
To provide participants with a strong understanding of microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip technologies, enabling them to design, analyze, and apply miniaturized fluidic systems for biomedical, diagnostic, analytical, and research applications.
Program Objectives
- Understand the fundamentals of microfluidics and microscale fluid behavior.
- Learn the design principles of microchannels and lab-on-a-chip devices.
- Explore fabrication techniques such as soft lithography, molding, and microfabrication.
- Understand fluid transport, mixing, separation, and droplet generation at the microscale.
- Examine surface chemistry, wettability, and fluid–surface interactions.
- Explore integration of biosensors, electrodes, and detection systems with microfluidic platforms.
- Understand sample preparation, manipulation, and analysis in lab-on-a-chip devices.

Program Structure
Module 1: Foundations of Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip Systems and Core Biological Principles
- Analyze the fundamental principles of microfluidics, including fluid dynamics, mass transport, and surface interactions
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological principles underlying lab-on-a-chip systems, including cellular biology and biochemistry
- Evaluate the current state of microfluidic technology and its applications in biomedical research and diagnostics
Module 2: Laboratory Techniques, Protocols, and Data Collection
- Configure and operate microfluidic devices, including setup, calibration, and troubleshooting
- Implement standardized laboratory protocols for microfluidic experiments, including sample preparation and data acquisition
- Design and execute experiments to collect and analyze data on microfluidic system performance and biological responses
Module 3: Bioinformatics Tools and Computational Analysis
- Apply bioinformatics tools and databases to analyze and interpret microfluidic data, including genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
- Develop computational models to simulate and predict microfluidic system behavior and biological outcomes
- Integrate bioinformatics and computational analysis to identify patterns and trends in microfluidic data and inform experimental design
Module 4: Research Methodology and Experimental Design
- Design and propose original research projects using microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, including hypothesis generation and experimental planning
- Develop and implement experimental protocols to test hypotheses and collect data, including statistical analysis and data interpretation
- Evaluate and refine research methodologies and experimental designs to optimize microfluidic system performance and biological outcomes
Module 5: Advanced Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip Systems Applications and Translational Research
- Investigate advanced applications of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, including point-of-care diagnostics, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering
- Develop and test microfluidic systems for translational research, including clinical trials and commercialization
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design and implement microfluidic solutions for real-world problems and applications
Module 6: Regulatory Compliance, Bioethics, and Safety Standards
- Analyze and apply regulatory requirements and guidelines for microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, including FDA and ISO standards
- Evaluate and address bioethical concerns and safety standards for microfluidic research and applications, including human subjects and animal research
- Develop and implement strategies for ensuring regulatory compliance, bioethics, and safety in microfluidic research and development
Module 7: Industry Applications, Career Pathways, and Case Studies
- Explore industry applications and career pathways in microfluidics, including biomedical research, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals
- Analyze case studies of successful microfluidic companies and products, including business models and market trends
- Develop a professional network and create a personalized career development plan in the field of microfluidics
