Microbial Quality Control with Python: Sterilization, Environmental Monitoring & Contamination Investigation

From Microbial Data Analysis to Sterilization Assessment, Contamination Tracking & Evidence-Based Quality Investigations

  • Mode: Virtual / Online
  • Type: Mentor Based
  • Level: Moderate
  • Duration: 3 Days(60-90 min each day)
  • Starts: 3 November 2026
  • Time: 5:00 PM IST

About This Course

Transform laboratory data into actionable quality-control insights using Python.
This three-day, hands-on workshop explores how computational data analysis can strengthen microbial quality control, laboratory equipment monitoring, steam sterilization assessment, and contamination investigations.
Participants will progress from foundational microbial data analysis to sterilization-cycle evaluation and advanced environmental monitoring. Through guided exercises in Google Colab, learners will work with laboratory datasets, calculate microbial counts and sterilization lethality, visualise contamination trends, and investigate potential quality deviations.
The workshop emphasises practical interpretation, data reliability, and evidence-based decision-making relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, microbiology laboratories, and quality-control operations.

Aim

To develop practical skills in microbial quality control through Python-based laboratory data analysis, sterilization performance assessment, and environmental contamination monitoring. The workshop aims to equip participants with the ability to identify laboratory deviations, interpret microbiological evidence, and support reliable quality-control decisions through data visualisation and systematic investigation.

Workshop Objectives

This workshop is designed to enable participants to:

  • Develop foundational Python skills for importing, cleaning, analysing, and visualising microbiological laboratory datasets.
  • Evaluate microbial data reliability through CFU calculations, replicate analysis, statistical interpretation, and equipment-performance monitoring.
  • Assess steam sterilization performance using temperature profiles, F₀ calculations, cycle comparisons, and supporting indicator evidence.
  • Analyse environmental contamination patterns using microbial monitoring data, trend charts, and location-based heatmaps.
  • Investigate laboratory deviations by integrating microbiological, equipment, sterilization, and environmental monitoring records.
  • Support quality improvement through evidence-based investigation reports, root-cause assessment, and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) recommendations.

Workshop Structure

Day 1: Microbial Data Quality & Laboratory Equipment Monitoring

  • Fundamentals of microbial quality control, data integrity, and laboratory reliability.
  • Introduction to Python, Google Colab, and pandas for laboratory data analysis.
  • Importing, organising, and cleaning microbial datasets.
  • Identifying missing values, duplicate entries, inconsistent units, and recording errors.
  • Calculating microbial counts (CFU/mL or CFU/g) using dilution factors.
  • Understanding controls, replicates, mean, standard deviation, and data variability.
  • Interpreting zero counts, countable ranges, and potentially unreliable results.
  • Evaluating the effects of incubation temperature, duration, and pH on microbial recovery.
  • Assessing incubator and water-bath temperature performance and pH measurement consistency.

Hands-On: Analyse Microbial Data & Equipment Performance

Use Google Colab to clean laboratory datasets, calculate microbial counts and replicate statistics, analyse temperature and pH records, generate performance charts, and identify potential data-quality or equipment deviations.

Tools: Google Colab | pandas | NumPy | Matplotlib

Practical Outcome: Cleaned microbial dataset, CFU analysis, equipment-performance charts, and data-quality assessment.

Day 2: Steam Sterilization Analysis & Cycle Deviation Assessment

  • Principles of moist-heat sterilization and microbial inactivation.
  • Understanding saturated steam, air removal, exposure time, and load configuration.
  • Heat distribution versus heat penetration in sterilization processes.
  • Analysing chamber and load temperature profiles.
  • Understanding D-values, z-values, and F₀ in thermal sterilization.
  • Calculating cumulative sterilization lethality using Python and defined reference conditions.
  • Comparing reference and deviating sterilization cycles.
  • Interpreting physical monitoring records, chemical indicators, and biological indicators.
  • Identifying cycle deviations, incomplete documentation, and investigation requirements.

Hands-On: Evaluate Sterilization Cycle Performance

Analyse autoclave temperature records, calculate cumulative F₀, compare reference and deviating cycles, evaluate load and indicator evidence, and document potential deviations with recommended follow-up checks.

Tools: Google Colab | pandas | NumPy | Matplotlib | Sterilization Cycle-Assessment Template

Practical Outcome: Temperature and F₀ plots, cycle-comparison analysis, and a structured sterilization deviation-assessment report.

Day 3: Environmental Monitoring & Advanced Contamination Investigation

  • Fundamentals of environmental microbiological monitoring for air, surfaces, and personnel.
  • Organising monitoring data by sampling location, date, method, and reporting unit.
  • Evaluating monitoring results under comparable sampling conditions.
  • Applying Python-based trend analysis to microbial contamination data.
  • Creating contamination heatmaps and monitoring visualisations.
  • Interpreting site-specific alert and action levels and identifying recurring excursions.
  • Integrating microbial QC, equipment, and sterilization records to investigate potential contamination events.
  • Differentiating observed evidence, possible associations, and root-cause hypotheses.
  • Developing investigation plans, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and effectiveness measures.

Hands-On: Investigate Contamination & Develop CAPA Recommendations

Analyse environmental monitoring datasets, create contamination trend charts and heatmaps, identify alert/action-level excursions, integrate findings from all three days, and prepare an evidence-based investigation report with proposed CAPA and effectiveness checks.

Tools: Google Colab | pandas | Matplotlib | Seaborn | Investigation & CAPA Templates

Practical Outcome: Environmental monitoring dashboard, contamination trend analysis, evidence matrix, and integrated investigation report with CAPA recommendations.

Cancer Drug Discovery: Creating Cancer Therapies

Undoubtedly, the professor's expertise was evident, and their ability to cover a vast amount of material within the given timeframe was impressive. However, the pace at which the content was presented made it challenging for some attendees, including myself, to fully grasp and absorb the information.
