This one-month intensive program is designed to provide participants with a thorough introduction to genomic data analysis. This program aims to equip participants with practical skills in genomic data analysis through hands-on experience using popular bioinformatics tools. Participants will explore genomic data retrieval, analysis, and visualization, enabling them to understand the underlying biological significance of genomic sequences.

Program Structure

  1. Introduction to Bioinformatics 
    • Overview of bioinformatics and its applications in genomics.
    • Introduction to key concepts: DNA, RNA, proteins, sequences, and databases.
  2. Getting Started with Free Tools
    • Overview of free bioinformatics tools and resources.
    • Introduction to platforms such as:
      • NCBI for accessing genomic data.
      • UCSC Genome Browser for visualizing genomic data.
      • Galaxy for data analysis workflows.
  3. Hands-On Session 1: Accessing and Retrieving Genomic Data 
    • Activity: Participants will use the NCBI database to search for a specific gene and download its genomic sequence in FASTA format.
    • Tools: NCBI Gene database and FASTA file handling.
  4. Hands-On Session 2: Sequence Analysis Using Bioinformatics Tools 
    • Activity: Participants will analyze the downloaded sequence using tools like:
      • MEGA X for phylogenetic analysis (if needed, this can be replaced with online tools).
      • BLAST for sequence alignment and finding similar sequences.
    • Tools: NCBI BLAST.
  5. Hands-On Session 3: Visualizing Genomic Data 
    • Activity: Participants will upload their sequences to the UCSC Genome Browser to visualize gene structure and annotations.
    • Tools: UCSC Genome Browser.
  6. Case Study: Analyzing a Gene of Interest 
    • Participants will choose a gene of interest, perform a simple analysis, and document their findings.
    • Discussion on how to interpret results and the biological significance of findings.
