Python for Biologists: Beginners Level

Unlocking the Power of Python: Empowering Biologists in Data-driven Discovery

About Workshop:

Python has become an essential tool in the field of biology due to its versatility and ease of use. This workshop is designed to cater specifically to biologists who wish to harness the power of Python for data analysis, visualization, and modeling in biological research. Participants will gain practical experience and hands-on training to confidently apply Python in their specific areas of interest.

Aim: The aim of the workshop “Python for Biologists” is to introduce biologists to the fundamental concepts of programming using Python and demonstrate its applications in various biological disciplines. The workshop will focus on enabling participants to leverage Python for sequence analysis, structure analysis, and pathway analysis in their research and work.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Introduce participants to Python programming concepts and syntax.
  2. Provide an overview of the applications of Python in different biological domains.
  3. Teach participants how to analyze gene sequences, proteins, and transcriptomic data using Python.
  4. Familiarize participants with structural biology techniques such as X-ray crystallography, NMR, and circular dichroism and how Python can aid in their analysis.
  5. Explore pathway analysis and its significance in understanding cellular dynamics, reconstruction, and biomarker prediction using Python-based tools.

Mentor Profile

Dr Harishchander Anandaram is an Assistant Professor at Centre for Excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. In his PhD thesis, he worked on pharmacogenomics and miRNA- regulated networks in psoriasis, a joint project with Georgetown University, USA, JIPMER, INDIA, CIBA, INDIA, and ILS, INDIA. His thesis illustrated a multi-disciplinary approach by combining computational biophysics and molecular biology machine learning. He has received the prestigious “Young Scientist Award” from “The Melinda Gates Foundation” for his research abstract on “The Implications of miRNA Dynamics in Infectious Diseases”. To date, he has reviewed more than 200 manuscripts in systems biology. He is currently working on predicting novel lead molecules and biomarkers using computational techniques to target inflammatory pathways associated with infectious and autoimmune disorders.
