About This Course

Generative AI & Intellectual Property Rights is an interdisciplinary international course designed to explore the complex legal and policy challenges arising from the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, DeepSeek, and others in creating content, code, images, music, and more. As AI blurs the line between human and machine creativity, this course brings together legal professionals, AI developers, scholars, and policymakers to discuss how Intellectual Property (IP) law is adapting to this fast-evolving landscape. Through real-world case studies, international legal precedents, and regulatory debates, participants will gain a deep understanding of the current and future state of AI-generated works and IP rights.

Aim

The course aims to provide participants with a critical and practical understanding of the legal and ethical issues surrounding IP in the context of generative AI, focusing on copyright, authorship, ownership, licensing, and the risks of infringement in AI-generated works.

📅 Module 1 – Global Copyright Laws & Legal Case Studies

  • Lecture: “Global Copyright Laws: Case Studies from Stability AI to NYT vs. OpenAI” – Understand the key copyright laws that govern AI-generated content and explore significant legal cases, including Stability AI and the NYT vs. OpenAI case.
  • Case Study: “Ownership Challenges in AI-Generated Artworks” – Analyze the ownership issues that arise with AI-generated art and how current laws address these challenges.

📅 Module 2 – Legal Debates & Policy in AI Content Creation

  • Debate: “Public Domain Status of AI-Generated Content: Pros and Cons” – Engage in a debate about whether AI-generated content should fall under public domain and the implications this has for creators, users, and the law.
  • Activity: “Drafting Licensing Agreements for AI-Generated Research Outputs” – Learn how to draft licensing agreements for AI-generated research, exploring the nuances of ownership, rights, and restrictions.
  • Submission: “Showcasing Top Licensing Agreements” – Present your drafted licensing agreements and receive feedback on their compliance with current legal frameworks.
