About

The Linux System Administration program provides hands-on training in Linux installation, command-line operations, server configuration, security hardening, networking, automation, and troubleshooting. Participants will learn to deploy and manage Linux servers, optimize system performance, and implement security best practices, preparing them for careers in IT infrastructure, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

  • To provide hands-on training in Linux installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • To train participants in networking, security hardening, and user management.
  • To develop expertise in automation, cloud integration, and performance tuning.
  • To introduce Linux-based security compliance and system hardening strategies.
  • To prepare participants for Linux administration roles in enterprise and cloud environments.

Program Structure

Week 1: Linux Fundamentals and System Management

Module 1: Introduction to Linux and Command Line Interface (CLI)

  • Understanding Linux Basics
    • Linux history and distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL, Debian).
    • Linux architecture: Kernel, Shell, File System, and User Space.
    • Importance of Linux in enterprise environments and cloud computing.
  • Navigating the Linux File System
    • Linux directory structure (/etc, /var, /usr, /home).
    • File management commands (ls, cp, mv, rm, find).
    • File permissions and ownership (chmod, chown, umask).

Hands-On Lab:

  • Setting up a Linux virtual machine and executing basic Linux commands.

Module 2: User Management and Process Control

  • Managing Users and Groups
    • Creating and managing user accounts (adduser, userdel, usermod).
    • Assigning permissions and groups (chmod, chown, groupadd).
    • Implementing sudo access and restricting user privileges.
  • Process and Job Management
    • Understanding process lifecycle and signals (ps, top, kill).
    • Managing foreground and background jobs (nohup, jobs, fg, bg).
    • Scheduling jobs with cron and at.

Hands-On Lab:

  • Creating user accounts, configuring group permissions, and scheduling jobs using cron.

Week 2: Networking, Security, and System Monitoring

Module 3: Linux Networking Essentials

  • Configuring Network Interfaces
    • Assigning static and dynamic IP addresses (ifconfig, ip a).
    • Configuring DNS and network routing (route, netstat, traceroute).
    • Troubleshooting network issues (ping, nslookup, tcpdump).
  • Firewall and Network Security
    • Configuring firewall rules with UFW, iptables, and firewalld.
    • Securing remote access with SSH (sshd_config, key-based authentication).
    • Implementing VPN and port forwarding.

Hands-On Lab:

  • Configuring a Linux firewall and setting up secure SSH access.

Module 4: Software Package Management and System Performance

  • Managing Software Packages
    • Installing and updating packages with APT (Ubuntu/Debian) and YUM/DNF (CentOS/RHEL).
    • Adding and removing repositories, package dependencies.
    • Building software from source (make, gcc, tar).
  • System Monitoring and Performance Optimization
    • Monitoring CPU, RAM, and disk usage (htop, iostat, vmstat).
    • Managing logs (syslog, journalctl, dmesg).
    • Automating system updates and alerts.

Hands-On Lab:

  • Installing and updating software packages, setting up a system monitoring dashboard.

Week 3: Advanced Linux Administration and Automation

Module 5: Linux Server Administration and Automation

  • Managing Services and SystemD
    • Starting, stopping, and managing services (systemctl, service).
    • Understanding runlevels and system targets.
  • Backup and Disaster Recovery
    • File system snapshots (rsync, tar, cron backups).
    • Configuring automated backups using shell scripts.

Hands-On Lab:

  • Automating service management and implementing a backup strategy.

Module 6: Virtualization, Containers, and Cloud Computing

  • Introduction to Virtualization and Containers
    • Using KVM, VirtualBox for Linux virtualization.
    • Introduction to Docker containers and Kubernetes.
  • Cloud Computing and Linux Integration
    • Deploying Linux instances in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
    • Automating cloud deployment with Ansible.

Hands-On Lab:

  • Deploying a Linux server in the cloud and managing it using Ansible.
